WASHINGTON (AP) — Al Gore, a Democratic favorite for the presidency despite pronouncements that he’s not running, spoke out on his signature issue Wednesday, warning of a “true planetary emergency” if Congress fails to act on global warming.

In a return he described as emotional, Gore testified before House panels that it is not too late to deal with climate change “and we have everything we need to get started.” By turns folksy and prescriptive, he urged the Democratic-controlled Congress to adopt an immediate freeze on greenhouse gases blamed for global warming.

Gore advised lawmakers to cut carbon dioxide and other warming gases 90 percent by 2050 to avert a crisis. Doing that, he said, will require a ban on any new coal-burning power plants — a major source of industrial carbon dioxide — that lack state-of-the-art controls to capture the gases.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — House Democrats voted Wednesday to give their leaders the authority to force White House officials to testify on the firings of U.S. attorneys.

The House Judiciary subcommittee vote was to authorize subpoenas. It does not mean that subpoenas will be issued; only that they could be if the four White House officials Democrats want to question do not voluntarily testify under oath.

But the act puts congressional Democrats on a collision course with President Bush. He said Tuesday that the four — top political adviser Karl Rove, former White House counsel Harriet Miers, and their two deputies — could be interviewed in the matter, but no oath could be administered and no transcript would be taken.

White House spokesman Tony Snow said later Wednesday that the administration’s “extraordinarily generous” offer for interviews would be pulled if subpoenas were issued.

Deep Vein Thrombosis

March 21, 2007

My mom called us last night to let us know that Dad has been diagnosed with Deep Vein Thrombosis. Apparently his leg has developed some blood clots. The danger here is if a clot should somehow let go, it could shoot to his brain and cause a pulmonary embulism. Quite unsettling. He’s on medication and blood thinners now and we’re hoping for the best.

Strangely yesterday afternoon I was feeling hot flashes in my leg at the same time Dad was at the doctor’s. I, of course, was not aware at the time that this was going on. Some sort of spiritual connection perhaps?
